The challenge
The money moves fast. The plan usually doesn’t.
Roadmaps are being rewritten around AI, often in the middle of a planning cycle. Engineers move onto AI features, agents and new pricing models. When that work is pulled forward, something else is pushed back: a platform upgrade, a customer commitment, a product line that still pays the bills. Teams discover the trade-off from a missed release.
Restructuring makes it sharper. The org chart changes in a day, while the portfolio often does not change at all. The same roadmap and customer commitments now sit on smaller teams. Nobody officially cancels anything, so everything slips a little, and the slippage surfaces one release at a time.
New demand keeps arriving too. The Cyber Resilience Act brings vulnerability and incident reporting that can interrupt any sprint, plus a compliance roadmap that competes with every product commitment. Plans that assumed all engineering capacity was free for roadmap work were already optimistic. Now they are wrong.
