The challenge
One program decision ripples through everything
When EV plans are reset, programs are canceled, plants switch to other models and powertrains, and supplier contracts are renegotiated. The write-down is the visible part. Inside the portfolio, engineers freed from one program are not automatically right for the next, hybrid and combustion refreshes have to come back fast, and software, battery and charging projects lose the vehicles they were built for.
The software-defined vehicle collides with all of it. The same software, electrical architecture and validation engineers are needed for the new platform, for reshaped EV programs, for hybrid derivatives and for the vehicles already on the road. When one slips, the others feel it. A headcount view hides the problem, because a platform team and a vehicle program team are not interchangeable.
Outside rules keep reopening the plan. Every change to auto tariffs raises the same questions: which models to localize, which parts to re-source, which plant takes which program. CO2 targets can be revised while programs that take years are already underway. Each answer becomes supplier qualification, tooling, homologation, plant and IT work, competing for engineers who are already committed.
