The challenge
Run is a capacity commitment, not just a cost line
Run, Grow, Transform gives IT and finance a shared language for where the money goes, and a direction for where it should go. Run keeps the business operating: infrastructure, maintenance, security, compliance and support. Grow improves and expands what the business already does. Transform funds new business models, new markets and higher-risk innovation. Most IT strategies share the same ambition: less of the total on Run, more on Grow and Transform.
The target is easy to write. The shift is hard to make, because the engineers who patch, secure and support systems are often the people the Transform portfolio needs. Run takes a share of almost every technical team’s week, yet that share is rarely in the portfolio plan. Projects are planned as if teams were free, the budget moves while the people stay where they were, and the gap shows up as late delivery.
The mix also drifts during the year. A critical system needs attention, an audit finding arrives, a project overruns, and Transform quietly becomes Run again. When budgets tighten, Run can’t be cut without operational risk and Grow has business sponsors, so Transform is often paused across the board, stopping the options that matter most along with those that matter least. With money and capacity in different places, nobody sees the mix change until the year-end report.
